Every fall, Cincinnati homeowners face the same choice. Put up temporary Christmas lights again, either yourself or with a hanging service, or install permanent lights once and stop thinking about it.

Both are real options, and neither is right for every house. This guide lays out the actual tradeoff so you can decide with clear eyes. LightXP is an Authorized Gemstone Dealer · Cincinnati/Dayton area, based in Maineville, so we sell the permanent side. We will still tell you when temporary makes more sense.

If you want the deeper look at ladder time, storage, and total ownership, we covered that in permanent outdoor lighting vs yearly hang. This piece is the quick decision version.

What “temporary” and “permanent” actually mean

Temporary Christmas lights are strings or clips that go up for the season and come down after. You might hang them yourself, or pay a service to put them up in November and take them down in January. Either way, the lights live on your house for a few weeks and in a bin or a warehouse the rest of the year.

Permanent lights are mounted once in a low-profile track along your soffit or fascia and stay there. You control them from an app: warm white on a normal Tuesday, a Halloween scene in October, a Christmas scene in December, all from the same system. We explain the mechanics in how permanent Christmas lights work.

One caution: some products sold as “permanent” are adhesive or clip-on kits. That is a different category from track-mounted lighting installed by a local crew. See permanent Christmas lights vs Govee before you compare.

The tradeoff at a glance

Temporary lights Permanent lights
When they work The Christmas season Every night of the year, plus every holiday you want
Effort each year Hang in November, take down in January, store, repair Pick a scene in the app
Who is on the ladder You or a hired crew, every year Our crew, once
Look Clips and strings that vary year to year Same clean line on your trim every time
Colors Whatever strings you bought Warm white plus color scenes, changeable anytime
Halloween, game days, birthdays Usually not Yes, from the app
What you own after year one Lights you hang again A system that stays on the house

Where temporary lights still win

We would rather be straight with you here.

  • You love the ritual. Some families enjoy hanging lights together the weekend after Thanksgiving. If that is part of the holiday for you, keep it.
  • You are moving soon. If you expect to sell in the next year or so, a permanent system may not be the right purchase for you on this house.
  • You only want Christmas, and only a little. A single strand around the porch is a different project from lighting a roofline.
  • You want inflatables, yard displays, or bushes. Permanent track goes on the roofline. Yard décor is its own thing, and you can still add it alongside permanent lights.

Where permanent lights win

  • You use them far more than six weeks a year. Most nights are not holidays, and warm white on the roofline is a home upgrade on any of them. More on that in warm white every night.
  • You are done with the November ladder. Ohio late-fall weather is cold, wet, and windy. With permanent lights nobody has to be on a roof in it every year.
  • You want Halloween and Christmas from the same lights. Orange and purple in October, a Christmas scene in December, team colors on game day, and back to warm white the next night.
  • You care how the house looks by day. Track mounts along the trim so it is low-profile in daylight, without clips and loose strings.
  • You want someone local to call. A LightXP install includes app setup with you, Gemstone’s lifetime manufacturer product warranty (manufacturer terms apply), and a 1-year LightXP labor warranty. Full list in what’s included in a LightXP install.

The cost question, honestly

Temporary looks cheaper because you pay for it a season at a time. Permanent asks for one decision up front and then stops asking. The fair comparison is not this year’s bill against an install. It is the hanging, removal, storage, replacement strings, and your time, year after year, against a system you own that works every night.

We do not post prices, because any number online would be wrong for most houses. What actually moves a permanent-lighting quote is roofline length, front-only versus more of the house, height, roofline complexity, and where power goes. We walk through each in what moves your quote and what you’re actually paying for.

If budget is the hesitation, front-only coverage is a common starting point. It is the same Gemstone track, app, and warranty on the side people see from the street.

Three questions to settle it

  1. How many nights a year do you want your house lit? If the honest answer is “just December,” temporary may be fine. If it is “most nights, plus holidays,” permanent fits better.
  2. Who is going on the ladder next November? If the answer is “me, again,” or a paid crew again, count that into the comparison.
  3. Are you staying in this house for a while? Permanent lighting rewards the homeowners who plan to enjoy it for years.

Timing this fall

Permanent installs take planning: a look at your house, a custom design, materials, and a spot on the crew calendar. That is why fall is our busy season. If you want lights up before the holidays, ask now and we will tell you the real next install date we can keep. No countdown gimmicks; see calendar honesty.

Next step

  1. Request a custom proposal through the proposal form, or
  2. Text a front-of-house photo and your city to (513) 480-8377, or call.

We will tell you whether permanent makes sense for your house, and if it doesn’t, we will say so.

FAQ

Are permanent Christmas lights better than temporary lights?

For homeowners who want lights on more than the Christmas season and are done hanging them every year, usually yes. If you only want a few weeks of lights, enjoy hanging them, or are moving soon, temporary can be the better fit.

Do permanent lights stay up all year?

Yes. The track and lights stay mounted on your trim. You turn them on, off, or change scenes from the app, so the same lights handle warm white everyday lighting, Halloween, and Christmas.

Can you see permanent lights during the day?

Track mounts along the trim and is low-profile in daylight, without the clips and loose strings of temporary lights. Ask us to show you how it fits your roofline.

Is it cheaper to hire someone to hang temporary lights every year?

It depends on your house and how many years you compare. Temporary is paid for every season; permanent is a one-time install you own. We give custom proposals rather than online price charts, so text (513) 480-8377 to see what fits your home.

Can I use permanent lights for Halloween?

Yes. Orange and purple scenes are a tap in the app, and you can switch back to warm white the next night. Ask us about the next install date we can keep if you want them up for a specific holiday.

Do you install permanent lights outside Cincinnati?

Yes. Our preferred area is Maineville and the Cincinnati–Dayton core, and we go farther when the job fits. See who LightXP serves.
